Square Silk Scarf
A square silk scarf lends itself to particular designs. The one worn by the model on this page is done in a technique known as salt resist. This is a slight misnomer because the salt used is not technically a resist, but rather it is an absorbent of the wet dye that has been painted onto the silk fabric. Basically the scarf is stretched out onto a wooden frame, and then dye of practically any color is applied. Rock salt is then sprinkled upon the wet square silk scarf surface and the salt actually begins to absorb some of the dye with which it is in contact. The result is fascinatingly artistic patterns that often evoke a response something like “how did they do that?” A close up version of the results of this process is seen in the photo below the model. As mentioned there are a large number of colors that can be used, and over a dozen done in the salt resist technique can be seen at my favorite site for silk scarves, Scarves by Linda. As mentioned, some designs simply lend themselves to using a square silk scarf when the pattern is painted onto the silk fabric. Here is an example of such a design: Poppy Silk Scarf. You can see that the poppy image on the scarf is more or less square, and so this pattern fits a square silk scarf almost perfectly. If this type of pattern were to be used on a longer rectangular scarf, it would probably have to be repeated several times. In some cases that repeating strategy might work well, but in the case of the poppy design on the scarf found at the above link, I think the effect is better with just one image on a square silk scarf.
The same would apply to another example: Iris Silk Scarf. The techniques for painting these two examples take a fair amount of time and planning. First of all the design must be planned out ahead of time because the square silk scarf fabric demands this preparation. That is, if the artist were to try to sort of ad lib the painting, the result is likely to be a picture that is skewed and unfinished. The first step in the actual painting of the scarf is to apply a resist to outline the various parts of the image. The black outline around the flowers and leaves in this particular design is the actual resist that is used. This is necessary because dye has a tendency to run when it is applied onto the silk, so the resist constrains the colors and makes the picture look like it should in the end. The resist needs to dry for at least 24 hours before the next part of the process takes place. This is the application of the individual colors which makes the picture look like it should. Properly applying the resist to make an attractive image on the silk surface and of course the waiting and painting time make this process long, so these types of square silk scarves need to sell for a bit more than others which take less time.
In any case a square silk scarf is an ideal accessory to almost any outfit. Different solid color scarves vs. silk scarves with a floral pattern, like those seen above, can give a strikingly different look to the same outfit. This lends itself well to looking good while travelling. The square silk scarves are small and light and almost effortless to carry, and the lady doesn’t have to pack as many outfits to get a different look every day. Perhaps the most amazing part of the story is that these elegant scarves can be obtained for reasonably good prices and are within the budget of almost any gift giver. One doesn’t need to spend $400 or more on a Hermes scarf in order to offer an elegant gift.
